| Ext. Rare "Hutchins & Mason" blacking bottle! |
| Here is a great rarity... the EXT. RARE Hutchins & Mason from Keene, NH. These bottles were unreported until a small group of them were discovered (unused) at a residence in Keene NH many years ago. Of the group that were found, most were badly damaged, and the perfect ones were quickly acquired. You can see a perfect example that had sold in the Bob Mebane collection through Glassworks, which brought $8000 plus the premium. The bottle is a square larger blacking, nicely embossed, "HUTCHINS & MASON / KEENE, NH / WATERPROOF BLACKING" on 2 panels. The bottle dates to the 1840s and was produced either at the later Gilsum Street glasshouse in Keene, NH or Mill Village in Stoddard, NH. There is reported to be only a handful of perfect examples known to exist, and unfortunately this isn't one of them. This one has a crack hidden right in the crease of the corner. Otherwise, this is the best example that a collector could ever ask for!! If you don't want to spend 10K, here is a relatively inexpensive alternative, that has been on my shelf for almost 10 years. |
